I thought it was only appropriate to have my first film post on my favorite movie, Super 8. I first watched this in the dollar theater near our house when I was about 11 years old, and I remember leaving the theater with a completely transfixed expression, that today still exists every time I see it. It is a perfect movie for anyone, as even someone like me who usually isn’t an avid fan of alien films and such (other than classics like E.T), completely appreciated this one.
The movie follows the story of fourteen year old Joe Lamb, who’s mother recently died from a steel mill accident, set in 1970’s Lillian, Ohio. While mourning the recent loss of his mother, with school just ending, Joe has a critical role in the production of a movie that his best friend is entering into a film contest. Joe and his friends sneak out one night to the train station in their town, filming scenes for the zombie film, unknowingly about to witness a terrible accident. Joe sees a truck in the distance driving towards a fast oncoming train, then yelling to his friends, as the train starts derailing and crashing. With this major accident leaving the town in fear, and other suspicious events occurring to those living there, Joe and his friends begin to investigate the specifics of the “accident” as he also learns more about his mother’s death. His crush on a girl named Alice Dainard, grows to more mutual feelings as he spends more time with her on the movie, and they open up to one another about their past. Together they discover what actually happened the day of the crash, and learn about the extraterrestrial being that is occupying their town.
If the plot wasn’t convincing enough (because I know how much of a bore reading movie plots are), then I can go on about the score of the film. I literally bought it from iTunes it was that good (and I usually download my music from those “sites”). Elle Fanning is also in it, if you’re a fan of her, and many other well-known actors.
So naturally I’m an avid Super 8-er, and with this much passion for the movie what better way to spread the love than to show it to my best friends. Yeah, well they didn’t seem to like it as much as I did (probably since they never saw the whole thing in one sitting as they’ve had to go home and stuff), and so now it’s just a running joke amongst all of us whenever I mention the movie (and I’ve given up trying to show it again). But I promise this film is nothing but comedy, sci-fi, action, a little romance, and a hundred percent amazing in every way possible. There is something in the movie for everyone to enjoy, and the aesthetic of it as a whole is just wonderful. Also if you hadn’t known J.J Abrams directed it and Steven Spielberg produced it, and that should already dictate it as unparalleled. I recommend you watch this movie right now, just take it in, and let it get to you (god knows it’s gotten to me).
